Joshua 1:9, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” (NIV)
I’ve dreamed of it for years now. That little university with the cream-colored buildings set on a sprawling campus that used to be a cow pasture.
The old Baptist college, we locals still call it, even though it’s been a private Christian university for years now.
Every day as I drove past it to head to the technical college I attended right after high school, I’d think to myself, that’s my school. I’ll go there someday.
Now that someday is nearly here. The twenty-first of August will be my first day of junior year and my first day of university.
It makes me blush to admit it, but it’s a scary thought. What will it be like? Will I like my professors? Will my professors like me? Will I make any friends?
Maybe you’re thinking much the same thoughts. Are you starting high school for the first time this month and worried about what experiences freshman year will hold? Or are you attending a new school because of rezoning or a recent move? Do you wonder if you’ll make new friends?
I wish I could tell you that the Bible says we’ll all make friends this year, have a great time, learn some stuff, make our parents proud, and, hey, while we’re at it, achieve world peace.
But God doesn’t promise that.
What He does promise is that He will be with us. Always.
He’s the God who makes dreams come true, plops friends in our lap when we’re least expecting them, arranges the most extraordinary of miracles, and gives us peace in our hearts…so if you’re feeling fear about this new year, like me, be courageous!
Jesus sticks closer than a brother. He’ll be right there with you, on your first day and every day (Proverbs 18:24).
Dear God, I’m s-c-a-r-e-d. Questions are swirling in my mind, but I surrender them all at Your feet here and now. Thank You for Your peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Journal through your questions. Don’t keep your worries bottled up. And remember, He is listening… Always.
Have you ever felt friendless?
